Game Recap: Hat Tricks Dropped Third Straight to Binghamton Saturday Night

by Jordan Simmons & Doug Lattuca

BINGHAMTON, NY — The Hat Tricks (6-7-0-1) were stumped by the Black Bears (9-1-3) 5-2 Saturday night in Binghamton. With the loss, the Hat Tricks went winless in a three-game in four-day series with the Black Bears.

In the first, forward Gavin Yates put Binghamton in front just four minutes into the game. Yates had two goals Friday night in a 5-4 Binghamton shootout win. The Hat Tricks responded three minutes later at 7:49 when forward Michael Falanga buried his first of the season to even the score at one.

In the middle frame, forward Don Olivieri potted two goals in the first eight minutes of the period to give the Black Bears a 3-1 lead. Olivieri, who scored twice on Friday night versus Danbury, found the back of the net twice in the second on Saturday, at 3:16 and at 7:46 on the power play.

But the Hat Tricks responded just over three minutes later. Captain Jonny Ruiz flicked a backhander into the top right corner to bring the Hat Tricks within one.

The last period was quiet through the first ten minutes or so, but Binghamton forward Brenden Stanko extended the lead back to two at 9:20. After about eight minutes, forward Nikita Ivashkin flew one into an empty net to put the game out of reach. The empty netter was Ivashkin’s 100th career goal as a Black Bear.

The Hat Tricks head back home to face Motor City in a two-game weekend series Friday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
