Game Recap: Hat Tricks Lose 6-2 Saturday, Split Weekend Series in Binghamton

by Doug Lattuca & Jordan Simmons

BINGHAMTON, NY — The Hat Tricks fell to the Black Bears 6-2 on Saturday night in the second game of the weekend series in Binghamton. Despite a lopsided final, the Hat Tricks, who came back from two goals down twice in the third period Friday, trailed by two early in the third before Binghamton added two empty-netters.

The Hat Tricks jumped out to a 1-0 lead following a Bohdan Zinchenko deflection on the powerplay. The Ukrainian forward ramped a pass from winger Corey Cunningham to the right corner on a five on three. With 1:20 remaining in the first, Binghamton answered when forward Tyson Kirkby tipped in a point shot to tie the game.

In the second frame, Binghamton took over. Five and a half minutes into the period a tic-tac-toe play resulted in an Austin Thompson goal to give Binghamton its first lead of the game. Just a minute later, Binghamton forward Thomas Wray dangled his way through the Hat Tricks defense to further the lead to two.

Not even six minutes into the third, Binghamton’s Gavin Yates received a cross-slot feed on the doorstep to tap home Binghamton’s fourth goal of the night on the power play.

Despite trailing by three, the Hat Tricks responded almost immediately. Cunningham batted a circle-to-circle pass down in the slot and ripped a shot inside the near post to cut the deficit to two.

The Hat Tricks applied pressure late but with the net empty twice, the Black Bears potted two to put the game out of reach.

The Hat Tricks return home Saturday, Jan. 27 in the lone game of the weekend against Watertown.
