Whalers to have championship banner raised March 7th

by Casey Bryant

The Danbury Whalers will have their 2012-13 Commissioner's Cup championship title immortalized in the Danbury Arena rafters Saturday, March 7th as part of Danbury Hockey Alumni Night. Members of the championship team will be in attendance as the city pays tribute to its only pro hockey championship to date.

The Whalers finished the 2012-13 regular season in second place, logging a 24-17-4-6 record. After sweeping the Thousand Island Privateers in the league semi-final, they advanced to play the top-seeded Dayton Demonz, who cruised to the final past the Danville Dashers.

Danbury completed a three-game sweep of Dayton, securing the Commissioner's Cup on home ice.

“To walk into this building with the fans and team it was an honor and a privilege every single day," said Herm Sorcher, Hat Tricks managing partner and former Whalers executive. "There are so many fantastic moments that come to my mind but for me, what stands out is how much this community loved the Whalers."

"We can’t thank the fans enough for a great 5-year run with the Danbury Whalers," said former Whalers President Alan Friedman. "The energy and enthusiasm was just amazing... we're looking forward to a great night.”

The Danbury Whalers ceased operations in 2015, with three Commissioner's Cup Final berths under their belt in five seasons.

Other honorees on Danbury Hockey Alumni Night include the 2005-06 Eastern Division Champion Danbury Trashers, 2015-16 Eastern Division Champion Danbury Titans, and Danbury Whalers fan-favorite Corey Fulton.

Former members of the Whalers organization, as well as members of the Titans, Mad Hatters and Trashers, are encouraged to register for Danbury Hockey Alumni Night to participate in the on-ice festivities.
